Why Paimaish

Built directly from real Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh & Rajasthan land-measurement records, not a generic unit table.

◧

Region-accurate

Punjab and Haryana use different Karam lengths depending on the local Area or System, and Rajasthan's Bigha depends on a chain length that varies by district and settlement lineage. Paimaish gets the math right for your specific record, not an average.

Five ways to convert

Enter a record the way it's actually written — Paimaish handles the rest.

Single Unit Mode

Every Punjab, Haryana, Himachal & Rajasthan Land Unit. Instantly.

Enter one value in one unit and see it converted into every other unit at once — legacy and modern, side by side.

Kanal & Marla Mode

Enter a Revenue Record, Exactly As Written.

Most Punjab & Haryana records — and Himachal's है-आ-सै records — are already written as Kanal + Marla. Enter both together for more precise input than converting a single decimal value.

Legacy Units Mode

Your District's Own Karam, Built In.

Bigha, Biswa & Biswansi depend on the local Karam length — Paimaish knows the figure for every Punjab tract, Haryana settlement system, and Rajasthan settlement lineage's chain.

FAQ

Where can I get Paimaish?

The iPhone and iPad app is out now on the App Store. The Android app is out now on Google Play. And the full converter runs right here in your browser at the web converter, with nothing to install.

Is Paimaish free?

Yes. The iOS app and the Android app are free downloads, and the in-browser converter on this site is free to use with no account. We're keeping the web converter available now that the apps have shipped — it's the quickest way to check a figure on a desktop, or on a phone you'd rather not install anything on.

Why did my Bigha or Killa value change when I switched Area or System?

Punjab, Haryana and Himachal land records were measured with a local unit called a Karam, and its length varied by district and by settlement era — anywhere from 54″ to 99″. The same "1 Bigha" is a different actual area depending on which Karam applies. Switching Area/System tells the app which historical Karam to use, so figures update to match. In Himachal the Karam drives Marla and Kanal too, so those change with the Area as well. Rajasthan works on the same principle but with a different unit: Appendix I of the Rajasthan Land Revenue (Land Records) Rules, 1957 fixes a chain length per former-State/settlement lineage instead of a Karam, and 1 chain × 1 chain = 1 Bigha — so picking the right lineage (not just the district) matters just as much.

What does *** mean in the results list?

It marks a unit that isn't the term actually used for your current Region/Area/System selection — for example, "Killa" only applies to a specific set of Punjab districts, so it shows as *** everywhere else rather than displaying a number that could be mistaken for a real figure. In Himachal, Acre and Rectangle show *** for the same reason: the Revenue Department's conversion table doesn't define them, and the top local tier there is the Ghumao (8 Kanal = 3,674 Sq. Yards). In Rajasthan, Sarsahi, Marla, Kanal, Ghumaon and Rectangle show *** because they aren't Rajasthan units at all, and Killa shows *** because in canal-colony records it's a parcel number inside a Murabba, not a fixed area.

What's the difference between Killa, Vadda Killa, and Haryana Killa?

These are three genuinely different historical units, not the same thing under different names. Killa (57.157″ Karam) is specific to Fazilka, Ropar, Patiala, Nabha & Malerkotla; Vadda Killa always uses the fixed 66″ Karam; and Haryana Killa is Haryana's own Sahakari Bandobasti-system unit. The app's Reference Table and caution note (in the app, below the results) spell out the exact figures and which districts use which. Rajasthan's canal-colony records also use the word "killa", but as a parcel number inside a Murabba rather than a fixed area, so it doesn't belong on this list at all — see the Rajasthan FAQ below.

Which regions does it cover?

Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan revenue units specifically — Kanal, Marla, Bigha, Biswa, Biswansi, Sarsahi, Ghumaon/Ghumao, Killa, Haryana Killa and Murabba — alongside standard units like Acre, Hectare, Sq. Yard and Sq. Feet.

How does Himachal Pradesh work?

Himachal records come in two forms, and the Area picker selects between them. है-आ-सै (Hectare–Are–Centare) records — Kangra, Una & Hamirpur — use a 57.5″ Karam with Sarsahi, Marla, Kanal and Ghumao. बीघा-बिस्वा-बिस्वांसी records — Mandi, Kullu, Chamba & Lahaul-Spiti — use a 56″ Karam with Biswansi, Biswa and Bigha. There are also two open-ended options for any other district using either Karam. Importantly, Himachal's Marla and Kanal are not Punjab's 66″ figures: 1 Marla = 19.198 Sq. Meter and 1 Kanal = 383.951 Sq. Meter in the 57.5″ districts, per the state Revenue Department's conversion table.

How does Rajasthan work?

Rajasthan has no single Bigha. Rule 70 of the Rajasthan Land Revenue (Land Records) Rules, 1957 records a plot in the Bighas "prevalent in the integrating unit", and Appendix I gives a separate chain length for each former-State or settlement lineage — one chain × one chain = one Bigha. Seven chains are in use (110 to 165 feet), so a Bigha ranges from 12,100 to 27,225 Sq. Feet, and the district alone isn't enough: in Ganganagar a Khalsa record uses a 165 ft chain while a Jagir record uses 127.5 ft on the same district. Pick the Area matching the lineage on your jamabandi, khasra or settlement record, not just the district. Rajasthan also has no Kanal, Marla, Sarsahi or Ghumaon, adds Murabba (25 Bigha, an allotment grouping) above Bigha, and Killa there means a parcel number inside a Murabba, not a fixed area. Section 177-A of the Rajasthan Land Revenue Act, 1956 separately fixes a statutory Bigha at 5/8 Acre, but only for enhanced rent on irrigated land — it's a distinct Area option, not the default figure.

What languages are supported?

The iOS and Android apps support English, Hindi and Punjabi with instant switching. This website is currently English-only.

Does the app work without an internet connection?

Yes — the Paimaish apps make no network requests to convert anything. Every calculation happens on your device, and the values you enter never leave it. The website works offline too once you've loaded it. See the Privacy Policy for details.

How do I see or clear my conversion history?

Tap the clock icon in the top toolbar. Swipe a row left to share it, swipe-to-delete a single entry, or use "Clear All" (which asks for confirmation first) to remove everything.

Does it work on iPad?

Yes. Portrait iPad shows the same single-column layout as iPhone, centered on the larger screen. Landscape iPad splits the screen — your entry on the left, every converted result on the right — so you can see both at once.

Is my data stored anywhere online?

Your conversions aren't. Everything you type into the converter is calculated locally in your browser (or on-device in the app) and never leaves it. The one exception is the feedback form — that's a message you deliberately choose to send, and it's stored in a private Google Sheet. See the Privacy Policy for exactly what it records.

How do I report a wrong figure or request a unit?

Use the feedback form — it takes a minute and doesn't need an account. For a conversion that looks wrong, include the mode, the Region/Area/System you had selected, what you entered, and what you expected. You can also email nirwan.goel@icloud.com.
